2Post-doctoral Position Application Form

Postdoctoral Position - Improved wood production under stress

Posted on 5 Jan 2018

Beijing Forestry University, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Tree Breeding by Molecular Design, Beijing, China

JOB DESCRIPTION

Understanding how woody plants acclimate to environmental stress could accelerate the selection and breeding of high-yielding, stress-resistant trees. Genetic engineering has a great potential for improving stress tolerance of economically important trees. In this project candidate genes from wood that are stress-responsive will be selected and functionally tested by transgenic approaches. For the screening of candidate genes large scale-RNAseq data bases are available and additional stress experiments can be conducted. Transgenic plants (trees and for preliminary test also Arabidopsis) will be tested under conditions and outdoors.
Planned Tests:

Ecophysiological analyses, analysis of the hydraulic of system, anatomy, wood composition.

Tree nutrition

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Tasks

Research work on trees will be conducted in labs, greenhouse, and in the field. Plan and perform physiological and biochemical studies aiming at understanding the mechanisms underlying stress tolerance in woody plants. The work will be performed under supervision of Prof A. Polle and Prof. Shaoliang Chen (Georg-August Universität Göttingen (Forstbotanik und Baumphysiologie, Büsgen-Institut) and Beijing Beijing Forestry University (College of Biological Science and Technology).

To elucidate mechanisms of stress tolerance in woody plants, such as drought or salt adaptation. And how stress tolerance can be improved by enhanced nutrient efficiency

To improve growth

To enhance wood quality

Qualifications

PhD degree: The successful candidate should have a PhD degree or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a PhD in biology or equivalent with a specialization in plant physiology, plant cell- and molecular biology or equivalent field. The age is better under 35 unless special circumstances exist.

Research experience: Previous expertise with tree stress physiology is a merit. Experience from research on trees is also an advantage, but not a prerequisite. Experience in microscopy is is useful.

Technology and skills: skills in plant transformation, CISPR/CAS, preferred in poplar, good computer skills with programs like R, Image J or other imaging programs.

Language: Very good skills in written and spoken English are necessary, as well as good communication skills and ability to work in a team.

The application should contain

CV with full publication list, and copies of the relevant degree certificates

a two-pages cover letter in which the applicant explains the research experiences and motivation for applying name and contact information of two referees

a copy of the PhD thesis and relevant publications

The application is to be submitted to BAIC_TBMD@bjfu.edu.cn
