Department of Palaeontology, the Natural History Museum, London, UK; £27,000 per annum
A 30-month fixed-term research position is available for a post-doctoral researcher to work as part of a team with Andrew Smith and Jeremy Young (both Natural History Museum) and Paul Pearson (Cardiff University) on a project entitled “Comparing land-based and deep-sea rock and fossil records of microplankton for bias in diversity patterns”. The successful candidate will assemble data on the quality of the rock record from deep-sea cores in the central Atlantic and synthesize taxonomic data on planktonic foraminifera and coccolithophorids both from the deep-sea and from land-based rock outcrops of the adjacent continental shelves. By rigorous and quantitative comparison of the deep-sea and onshore (land-based) outcrop sedimentary rock and fossil records this work will address two key issues: what is the relationship of the deep-sea rock record to that preserved on the adjacent continental blocks; and are large-scale patterns of diversity through time in marine microplankton accurately captured? Further details of the project are available on request from Andrew Smith (a.smith@nhm.ac.uk a.smith@nhm.ac.uk>) or Jeremy Young (j.young@nhm.ac.uk j.young@nhm.ac.uk>)
Applicants must have completed or be about to complete a relevant Ph. D. which includes palaeontology or analytical palaeobiology as a significant component, and have a strong publication record (papers published or in press).
Applications should be addressed to Andrew Smith (a.smith@nhm.ac.uk) Department of Palaeontology, The Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD, UK, with a covering letter explaining why you are interested in the post together with a full cv. Closing date for applications October 24th (interviews mid November).
