WHIM (The What-If Machine) is European collaborative research project in the area of Computational Creativity (CC) to explore the potential of machines to invent novel counterfactual scenarios and what-if questions that are thought-provoking, insightful or entertaining (or all three). WHIM will evaluate these conceptual scenarios by automatically rendering them in creative linguistic forms such as stories, poems or jokes. UCD’s role in WHIM is a pivotal one: we will develop the core ideation mechanism, to generate novel counterfactuals that are both surprising yet plausible. We will build on work in metaphor interpretation and humour analysis and generation to push the boundaries of conceptual norms in thought-provoking ways.
The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
