We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to work under Bruce Lipschultz’s supervision through the York Plasma Institute, which is embedded in the Department of Physics at the University of York.
You will be involved in a research project aimed at understanding the role of magnetic topology on divertor physics in tokamaks: a) the effect of varying the x-point topology (single vs multiple x-points) on cross-field transport including turbulence; b) the effect of varying divertor magnetic topology on access to detachment, modifying radiation volume, stability of detachment.
The position requires an experimental background in plasma physics.
The research will initially be focused on the TCV tokamak and the magnetic configurations and divertor plasmas there. It will then evolve into split time between TCV and research on the MAST tokamak which has the closed, Super-X divertor as well as the capability to produce other magnetic configurations for the divertor plasma.
Please note the successful candidate for this position will not be based at the University of York. Depending on experimental programmes and your own interests, you may be based primarily at the TCV tokamak, Centre de Recherches en Physiques des Plasmas in Lausanne, Switzerland or at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in the UK. You will be required to travel for extended periods between these two locations.
You will have an experimentally-based PhD in Physics with emphasis in plasmas. Some expertise in plasma diagnostics is also needed.
The post is fixed term and is available for a period of three years.
Closing date: Wednesday 16 April 2014.
