Postdoctoral Fellow : Edmonton, Canada

Postdoctoral Fellow, Cardiovascular and Translational Research (2 positions)

The Departments of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at the University of Alberta are two of Canada’s leading academic departments in medical and pediatric research and education. The University of Alberta is one of the top 100 universities in the world, and is the 4th best-ranked university in Canada (QS, 2015). Located in Edmonton, it is a vibrant hub with year round sport and cultural activities. Edmonton, with one million inhabitants, is the capital of the Province of Alberta and is in close vicinity to major Canadian attractions, including the Rocky Mountains and wonderful National Parks.

Dr. Richard Schulz is seeking two enthusiastic Postdoctoral Fellows to design and conduct scientific research in a cardiovascular pharmacology and pathophysiology laboratory which performs studies on the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease, heart failure and the impact of immune-related injury (e.g. septic shock) on heart and vascular function. The mission of the research portfolio is to enhance the capacity to succeed in research and translate knowledge for the betterment of children. Dr. Schulz’ lab is an innovative, international and multicultural research group that combines basic research with translational medicine, seeking to implement bench side findings into clinical practice.

These Postdoctoral Fellowships will allow the successful candidates to further develop a scientific career in a fast-paced, evolving field. Among other, the research involves a multifaceted approach, including functional bioassays, pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology and immunohisto/cytochemistry. Dr. Schulz’ lab team performs research to understand the impact of reactive oxygen- nitrogen species and matrix metalloproteinases activation in the pathogenesis of heart and vascular injury. This is a basic research lab doing studies both in vitro and in vivo, at a molecular, cellular, whole organ and whole animal level. Plans are underway to continue to bring lab research findings into translational research via randomized clinical trials, in close collaboration with established clinician cardiologists.

The Schulz laboratory is a member of several organizational entities including the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, the Cardiovascular Research Centre, the Women and Children's Health Research Institute and the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta. Our goal is to find novel targeted therapies with fewer side effects to treat and/or prevent cardiovascular disease.

Applicant qualifications
• PhD or MD in related discipline. Applicants should have received their degree within the last 2 years, or be in the final stages of an established program; for the latter, degrees must be obtained prior to the start of the Fellowship.
• Publication track record with original research articles published as first author.
• Excellent English skills, both written and verbal, and experience in preparation of research papers and reports. The successful candidates will be required to prepare applications for funding agencies to supplement their fellowships.
• Data management skills with relevant experience with graphing, organization, statistical analysis, spreadsheets, archiving, etc.
• The Postdoctoral Fellows may be required to participate in teaching and training/mentoring activities.

Candidates having some, or all, of the following skills and experience are encouraged to apply:
• Experience with in vivo and/or in vitro pharmacology/physiology techniques with rodents (rats and/or mice).
• Molecular biology skills including RT-PCRDNA/RNA work including plasmid construction, siRNA studies, chimera protein construction/expression and purification; cell and/or tissue protein transfection including experience with adenoviral and/or lentiviral approaches.
• General protein biochemistry skills including some of the following: protein purification, immunoblotting, immunoprecipitations, post-translational modification analysis, proteomics, etc.
• Cell and/or tissue imaging studies experience including one or more of the following: confocal microscopy, immunohisto/cytochemistry, electron microscopy.
• General cell culture experience including maintaining cell lines and troubleshooting abilities.

Salary is commensurate with training and experience, and includes a medical and dental benefit package. The successful candidate will be required to prepare and submit applications for funding to Alberta Innovates Health Solutions, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and/or other funding sources.
