Postdoctoral Researcher : Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland

Maynooth University
Ollscoil Mhá Nuad

Maynooth University (National University of Ireland, Maynooth) is the fastest growing university in Ireland with over 10,000 students and outstanding research and scholarship in the sciences, humanities and social sciences. The university is now entering a new and exciting phase of its development, with a new strategic plan centred on further enhancing our academic programmes, providing a distinctive student experience of the highest quality, focusing our research activities on a small number of priority themes, and further internationalising the university. To support this development, the university is seeking to recruit outstanding academics, with a strong track record of research and teaching, to the following position:

Department of Biology
Postdoctoral Researcher (27 Month Contract)

The Department of Biology has a full-time academic staff of 21. It provides teaching in multiple degree programmes to almost 1100 students, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral level. The Department of Biology offers well-established BSc Honours degree programmes in Biology, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, and Biotechnology and an award-winning taught MSc programme in Immunology and Global Health. It has a strong tradition in PhD education and currently directs a number of structured PhD programmes. The Department of Biology has a strong international reputation in research and has prioritised the following two research themes for strategic development and investment:

1. Immunology and Microbiology
2. Science underpinning sustainable exploitation of crop plants

Both themes are strongly supported by state-of-the-art approaches and research in Genomics, Proteomics and Chemical Biology.

The Role

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research within the Molecular Immunology Laboratory of Prof. Paul Moynagh. The laboratory is interested in innate immune signalling and its relevance to inflammatory diseases. This programme of research aims to explore, at the molecular and cellular levels, how novel proteins regulate ubiquitination pathways in innate immunity and how this relates to physiology and pathophysiology. The research will combine state-of-the-art approaches in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and protein engineering. The physiological relevance of the novel proteins will be evaluated in cell based and pre-clinical models of inflammatory diseases and also in ex vivo tissue samples from patient cohorts. More information on the research efforts of Prof, Moynagh’s laboratory can be obtained from the following publications (Yang et al. (2014) Immunity 41:973-987; Yang et al (2013) Nature Immunology 14:927-936; Moynagh (2014) Nature Reviews Immunology 14:122-131)

This is an excellent opportunity for ambitious postdoctoral researchers aiming to gain multidisciplinary experience in a dynamic and collegial team-based environment.
