A 3 year long, fully funded PhD studentship post is available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sheffield. This project focuses on the dynamics for ordered repeated frictional type materials that are used in structural applications ranging from high performance aerospace and composite materials to cabling and rope type structures. Currently mathematical solutions to describe the characteristics of these materials are either limited to simplified geometries or are highly dependent on test data. The aim of this project would be to extend the current state-of-the-art through the development of mathematical models to describe them, in particularly their dynamics.
The student will become part of the Dynamics Research Group that includes a number of PhD and post-doctoral researchers working on various dynamics problems. As a PhD student, the successful candidate will directly benefit from a peer network of colleagues in related research projects. The student will have the opportunity to develop both their personal and technical skills throughout the university and through the attendance of national and international conferences.
Applicants should have a Bachelors (BSc or BEng) or Masters level (MEng or MSc) degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant discipline (e.g. Mathematics, Physics, et cetera). Please note this position is only available for UK and EU students. The project will be primarily supervised by Dr Charles Lord.
The studentship is supported by the University of Sheffield and covers the cost of tuition fees with an annual tax-free stipend for 3 years at the standard UK research rate (£14,296 in 2016/2017)
