  Job Description

  The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Fellow is to provide support for our correlation studies for our clinical trials conducted at the Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics. Perform image analysis and interpretation, help with evaluation and validation of H&Es, IHC, IF, IMC and other stains. Support our laboratory with expertise in tissue evaluation, tissue handling and staining, cell line work and support with other tasks that might occur.

  Our laboratory is focused on new predictive and prognostic biomarkers with emphasis in antibody-based therapies, immuno-oncology and pre-clinical studies.

  KEY FUNCTIONS

  1.    To perform:

  -      Immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridization, mass spectrometry and other methods.

  -      Evaluate and validate antibody protocols for e.g. IHC, in situ hybridization methods, mass spectrometry, and other staining or procedures.

  -      Image analysis of formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissues with different image analysis systems.

  -      Apply different image analysis software for different stains and create suitable algorithms for biomarker analysis.

  -      Analyze and interpret the results obtained by the image software.

  -      Supervise image analysis of other laboratory personnel.

  -      Perform annotations e.g. for tissue microarray (TMA) construction, or tumor content, etc.

  -      Evaluation of different tissue formats such as e. g. whole tissue sections, TMAs, etc.

  -      Enter the data from tissue quality control and image analysis results in dedicated databases and maintain the databases

  -      Assist in coordinating the logistics with study material (internally and/or externally collaborators).

  -      Preparing reports on image analysis results together with the investigator, and/or collaborators.

  -      Maintain cell line cultures, harvesting cell lines and process cell line further e.g. paraffin embedding.

  -      Paraffin embedding of PDX tissues/tumors.

  -      Select and evaluate suitable tissues for TMA construction.

  -      Put together blocks and slides for TMA construction.

  -      Make files for TMAs.

  -      Help with other task that might occur.

  2.    To assist with:

  -      Troubleshooting of protocols/assays.

  -      Selection of suitable antibodies for different specimens and different applications (e.g. IHC, immune fluorescence (IF), western blot (WB), and others.

  -      Finding suitable controls for different assays such as e.g. cell lines for IHC, etc.

  -      Logistics such as e.g. ordering antibodies, data entry into databases, etc.

  -      Extract clinic-pathological data from different sources e.g. databases or collaborator reports.

  -      Implementation of new biomarkers for tissue based detection

  -      Putting together data files for further analysis

  -      Enter results timely and accurately in databases and maintain database

  -      Perform simple statistical analysis.

  -      Preparing data for scientific reports, abstracts, manuscripts, SOPs, etc.

  -      TMA construction.

  -      Assist with other tasks that might occur.

  3.    To learn and assist with:

  -      Special tissue bases techniques such as IHC, IF, in situ methods, etc.

  -      Learn to perform and interpret IHC, IF, mass spectrometry and other stains/staining procedures.

  -      Learn to compose a TMA map and corresponding file.

  -      Learn image software applications.

  -      Learn to use different image analysis software.

  -      Learn how to use different databases.

  -      Learn how to order supplies.

  -      Learn cell line culture work.

  -      Learn to perform simple statistical analysis.

  -      Learn other techniques or tasks as needed.

  -      Learn other tasks that might occur.

  4.    To maintain a high level of professional expertise and credibility through educational programs,

  including on-site training / off-site conferences:

  –   Attend department research meetings and conferences.

  –   Attend approved off-site meetings and conferences.

  –   Supplement education as needed through use of reference materials, lectures, etc.

  –   Be punctual in arriving at all professional functions.

  –   Inform appropriate staff and arrange coverage for experiments if needed.

  5.    To assist with development of and maintaining databases:

  –   Generate documents on computer, using word, excel spreadsheets, and other software

  –   Communicate with appropriate individual(s) regarding upcoming deadlines, meetings, etc.

  6.    Other duties and assignments:

  –   To assist with other duties that may occur (e.g. learn new techniques, etc.)

  –   Understand and adhere to the policies and procedures related to conduct of clinical trials and human tissue as delineated in the department training manual and the institution policies and guidelines

  The performance for all expected outcomes is measured by observation by supervisor, faculty and co-workers, the accuracy and timeliness of work produced, and the demonstrated ability to effectively work under stress. The position also requires one to anticipate needs, to recognize situations requiring assistance and have the ability to refer or perform any necessary tasks, and to comprehend the goals of the department/program.

  The above functions require the following abilities and skills:

  EDUCATION

  Required: MD or DVM (doctor of veterinary Medicine) with minimum one year experience in pathology

  Preferred: Research experience, experience with image analysis
