 INSTITUTE FOR MOLECULAR BIOSCIENCE

The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is a leading global life sciences research institute committed to improving quality of life through research. IMB was established in 2000 as UQ’s first research institute and is the cornerstone of one of the largest bioscience research precincts in Australia.

The Institute is home to more than 450 researchers, postgraduate students and support staff from more than 40 countries who work in partnership with their academic, industry and clinical colleagues around the world to advance knowledge in areas including pain, rare diseases, inflammation, superbug infection, cardiovascular disease, environmental research, drug discovery and development, cancer, diabetes and obesity, and reproductive health. Our mission is to drive the bioeconomy and create better health; our vision is to be a life sciences institute with global impact.

Details of the research interests of the Institute may be accessed on the Institute’s website at: https://imb.uq.edu.au/

The Institute recognises and values equity and diversity, and encourages applications from any individual who meets the requirements of this position irrespective of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, age or other protected attributes.

IMB strives to provide an inclusive working environment, and along with the University is committed to supporting staff with family and caring responsibilities by providing policies, programs and initiatives to help balance work and family responsibilities.

Specific initiatives at IMB can be found at (https://imb.uq.edu.au/about/equity-and-diversity-imb)

The role: A postdoctoral research officer is required to join a team working under Doctor Anne Karine Lagendijk. Research in the lab is focused on mechanical pathways that regulate vascular growth and blood vessel maintenance using zebrafish as a model organism. The team is aiming to implement a novel human 3D culture system at the IMB to complement analysis in zebrafish. The research officer will use these two model systems to investigate mechanical changes in endothelial cells during embryonic development and in vascular pathologies.

The successful candidate will perform, confocal, timelapse and high-speed imaging, molecular and biochemical techniques and use genetic models to study vascular morphogenesis at a cellular level in both zebrafish and bioengeneered microvessels. They will be responsible for experimental design, data analyses, and manuscript preparation, and will also be encouraged to apply for both independent and collaborative funding to support his/her research focus.

The person: The applicants must have a PhD in the area of genetics, developmental or cell biology, bioengeneering or a related field. Applicants must have demonstrated research competence in molecular biology, evidenced by prominent authorship on papers published in well-regarded, peer-reviewed, international journals. Experience in a biomedical research context is preferred, as is a demonstrable interest in vascular biology. Attention to detail in carrying out experimental procedures and careful documentation of experimental work is essential. The successful applicant will also show a high level of communication and interpersonal skills, an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and willingness to accept communal responsibilities in the laboratory.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and actively encourages applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Please refer to the University’s Diversity and Inclusion webpage (https://staff.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/human-resources/diversity) for further information and points of contact if you require additional support.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

Remuneration: This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for two years at Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range AUD$77,307- $89,285 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range AUD$90,449- $104,464 p.a.).
