Postdoctoral researcher in analytical chemistry in relation to human biomonitoring

  Aarhus University

A postdoctoral position (2 years) is open at Aarhus University, Department of Environmental Science, Section for Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology (www.envs.au.dk) as soon as possible.

The position is in the field of analytical chemistry. Most of the work will be in the framework of the EU H2020 project HBM4EU (www.hbm4eu.eu), which aims to coordinate and advance human biomonitoring in Europe to provide evidence of chemical exposures and their health effects on humans and to improve risk assessment for chemical policy makers. Substances prioritized in the project are i) flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), phthalates and their replacements, bisphenols, aromatic amines, cadmium and chromium and ii) acrylamides, apriotic solvents, mycotoxins, diisocyanates, pesticides, UV filters, mercury, lead and arsenic, reflecting two rounds of prioritization.

  Tasks and responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of an established team that studies environmental pollution (including the Arctic) and chemical exposures to humans and wildlife. The team examines a range of problematic chemicals, mainly persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and emerging contaminants, using a number of instrumental techniques (GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, HPLC-MS/MS, GC-Orbitrap-HRMS, HPLC-Orbitrap-HRMS). The laboratory is accredited and has a strong focus on QA/QC. In the HBM4EU project, the team has a task leader role coordinating the analytical work in the project.

The primary responsibility of the postdoctoral researcher will be to work in the HBM4EU project. This includes planning and organisation of the analytical work both at a conceptual and a more practical level, coordination with other project activities and communication with project partners. The work will require a good understanding of analytical chemistry and QA/QC measures as well as good organisational and communication skills. It includes an international and a national component of collaboration, the latter with meetings and communication in Danish. The tasks may also include experimental work to develop, improve or extend analytical methods for human matrices.

The successful candidate is expected to actively pursue the publication of results in the scientific literature and their presentations at relevant conferences. He/She is also expected to contribute to new project proposals, and the development of new project ideas will be welcomed. As part of a team, the postdoctoral researcher will collaborate closely with other members of the team and contribute to the overall progress in the team’s research. He/She may be involved in the supervision of students or guest researchers and in the presentation of the project and its results to Danish authorities and interested groups.

  Qualifications

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in (analytical or environmental) chemistry, toxicology or a closely related discipline. It will be an advantage, if he/she

o    has worked with some of the prioritized substances, preferably including their chemical analysis in human samples,

o    is familiar with the design of monitoring programmes including QA/QC requirements,

o    has experience with statistical data treatment,

  Furthermore, the candidate should

o    be well-organised in his/her work and able to handle complex tasks,

o    be able to work independently, while taking into account the situation in a team,

o    be result- and product-oriented and able to think one step ahead of the task at hand,

o    have excellent communication skills in English that can bridge between different scientific disciplines,

  Department of Environmental Science

The Department of Environmental Science has about 150 employees working in basic and problem-oriented research within environmental science, including chemical and physical processes and interactions between environment and society. The department carries out research-based consultancy for the public sector and provides research-based advice. The academic expertise ranges from atmospheric chemistry and physics, via environmental chemistry, microbiology and biotechnology to environmental economics, environmental geography, political science and sociology. The institute is located in frederiksborgvej 399, 4000 Roskilde, Denmark.
