  Job Description

  Are you passionate about leading research that supports the development of new materials and material applications as well as the understanding of new materials physics? Do you want to collaborate with a diverse and creative team to develop novel, state of the art materials platforms? If so, this may be the opportunity for you. You may be called on to: + Guide the labs mission areas to new possibilities in electronic materials + Lead and conduct research involving synthesis and characterization of ceramic materials + Develop innovative materials platforms that disrupt current technologies in energy sciences, defense technologies, space systems and more + Use disruptive technologies to further state of the art research + Lead a diverse group of staff, technologists, postdocs and interns to initiate creative research directions in materials science + Publish in high impact journals and present research results on an international platform

  Required:

  + PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related discipline + Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics + Publication and innovation record, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents + Experience with ceramics/composite synthesis and characterization + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

  Desired:

  + Understanding of mechanical and electrical properties of composite materials + Experience with novel ceramics processing methods + Experience characterizing ceramic electrical components + Desire to develop a research portfolio centered around new materials innovation + Demonstration of forward thinking and ability to anticipate engineering needs that are not yet present + Understanding of ceramic materials in electronic devices including ferroelectric materials + Understanding of solid state ionic transport + Effective written and oral interpersonal skills

  Department Description:

  The Electronic, Optical and Nanomaterials Department provides innovation in the design, synthesis and development of advanced, multifunctional materials to satisfy unique needs in electronic, optical, electrochemical, structural and selective-molecular-binding applications. We control chemical and structural characteristics, from the nanoscale to microscale, in inorganic and hybrid systems to explore new material constructs and strategies aimed at optimizing and expanding material performance. Our efforts support DOE Defense Programs, DOE Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, DOE Electricity Distribution and Energy Reliability offices, other federal agencies and industry. In addition, we pursue partnerships with universities and establish ongoing collaborations with other experts in the field to use our research investments while participating in, and contributing to, the international research community. Research thrusts include nanoparticle, nanofiber, and atomic layer deposited materials, thin films, passive and active materials for electronic, magnetic, photonic, electromechanical, and fluidic microsystems, self-assembly, and colloid chemistry.

  Security Clearance:

  Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
