Open Postdoc position Nano-Technology/Geochemistry

Department of Environmental Geosciences – EDGE

Center for Microbiology and Environmental System Science

The Department of Environmental Geosciences at the University of Vienna (20 faculties and centres, about 178 fields of study, approx. 9.800 members of staff, more than 90.000 students) seeks to fill the position of a postdoc on the topic of Heteroagglomeration of nanomaterials with freshwater suspended particulate matter.

The Department of Environmental Geosciences is a highly experienced and internationally recognized team carrying out research on environmental contaminants, hydrogeology and nanogeosciences.

The (hetero-) agglomeration of manufactured nanomaterials, which is the core topic of the position, is one of the three most relevant transformation processes in the environment: (i) physicochemical transformation, (ii) (hetero-) agglomeration and (iii) dissolution. The heteroagglomeration of nanomaterials with suspended particulate matter changes the transport behavior of the nanoparticles in surface waters and might pose effects on the ecosystem functions of suspended natural matter (flocs), which are micron-sized bioreactors which take part in e.g. nutrient cycling and pollutant degradation. The project in which the candidate will work is one of three sub- projects dealing with the general nanomaterial transformation processes in the environment. The tasks involve the comparison of different floc systems (natural, synthetic and WWTP suspended matter) and their interaction with manufactured nanoparticles, optimization of synthetic floc formation processes, experimental set-ups and analytical techniques. In a final step, those improved methods will be validated and submitted as a proposed guideline to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The outcomes of the project will largely influence the safety testing of nanomaterials in OECD countries.

The researchers of the department are at the forefront of nanoparticle analysis, their behaviourand fate in the natural environment and development of regulatory tools. The department operates a unique, well-equipped infrastructure to investigate nanoparticulate processes and analyse nanoparticles in complex aquatic systems and have access to specialized instrumentation in-house or through intensive collaborations on all levels.
