About the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences was formed in July 2014 through the merger of the former Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Department of Agriculture and Food Systems. The new Faculty creates opportunities for closer research collaborations and the formation of interdisciplinary teams to address major issues in veterinary and agricultural sciences. The Faculty's core teaching, postgraduate training, research, clinical consultancy and industry development activities are delivered at the Parkville, Werribee and Dookie campuses, and the Veterinary Hospital operates at Werribee.

Our interdisciplinary approach applies scientific, social, political and economic perspectives to address the needs of both human communities and the natural environment. We address the issues of climate change, food production and food security, crop, plant and soil health, water management, sustainable use of resources for agriculture, animal health and disease and other problems challenging key decision makers today About the Role The Research Fellow (Microbiology) will be responsible for contributing to research at the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, Veterinary Biosciences, Melbourne Veterinary School. Working within the Asia-Pacific Centre of Animal Health (APCAH), this position will be responsible for supporting research activities in the area of microbiology, collaborating widely with staff and students in the Faculty.

The position will be responsible for conducting research with a focus on commercial testing, microbiological and mycoplasma diagnostic work and quality control and will support laboratory clinical studies and trials. The Research Fellow (Microbiology) will oversee laboratory operations, sample inventory and preparation of research paperwork as required. The position will also contribute to research projects being undertaken in the research group by supervision of students, and to attraction of funding for research

In a typical week at work, you may:

  Conduct research and deliver against research objectives and reporting requirements to meet project milestones and reporting schedule

  Assist in attracting and retaining research funding from competitive research grants and other funding sources

  Work collaboratively with the Faculty to contribute to elements of research projects including preparation of reports, and papers as appropriate

About You You are an experienced researcher with knowledge and experience in scientific procedures and the safe operation of equipment in a teaching or research laboratory, as well and knowledge of accreditation for regulatory bodies such as DAWR, NATA, APVMA, and OGTR. Able to undertake research with limited supervision and deliver against research objectives, you are also able to work as an effective member of a broader team with diverse cultural and scientific backgrounds with ease. Your communication and interpersonal skills will be highlighted in your ability to guide, assist with supervision, and mentor research students. You will also be experienced in working with both live and dead animals submitted for microbiological and pathological exams.

You will further have:

  An awarded veterinary degree.

  A relevant PhD awarded in microbiology or similar discipline.

  Proven experience in molecular biology, especially in real-time PCR and high-resolution melt curve analysis and in veterinary virology.
