21P-108 Postdoctoral Scientist in Vaccine Development (Avian Immunology)

Organisation position and purpose

This post is funded by an Industrial Partnership Awards (BBSRC and Zoeitis Inc.) to develop novel cell free vaccine against an economically important viral disease in chickens. The post holder will broadly work to investigate the immunogenicity and efficacy of novel vaccines against virally-induced cancer model in chickens. Our current projects involve studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the induction of protective immune responses against viral infections. We are a friendly and multicultural research team composed of principal investigator, three postdocs and two PhD students, collaborating with several groups within the institute and other UK and international Institutions.

The Postdoctoral fellow will be a pivotal member of the team supporting the Avian Immunology research group in delivering excellent science and helping to perform in vivo and in vitro experiments to study host-pathogen interaction in chickens as part of the wider Institute scientific strategy. This position will report to head of Avian Immunology Group, Dr. ShahriarBehboudi.

Main duties and responsibility

•Developing research project to meet the objectives outlined in the project funded by industrial partnership award to develop novel cell free vaccine against a cancer model in chickens

•Supporting other scientists to advance our understanding on vaccine development against viral diseases in chickens

•Obtaining relevant home office licenses for animal experimentation and conducting in vivo experiments in chickens

•Generating high impact research publications based on the findings from the research projects

•Providing training to postgraduate students within the group

•Supporting senior and junior colleagues and sharing laboratory and research resources

•Help with the day-to-day supervision and training of students

This job description is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. The jobholder will carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by his/her line manager. Personal specification

•Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

•Evidence of efficient working and keeping well organised archives and high-quality records of research data

•A willingness to show initiative in developing and planning new strategies and new techniques and to achieve research goals

•Ability to demonstrate excellent and effective communications with other laboratory members and can provide both written and oral examples of liaising regularly with the Group Leader to develop and discuss ideas

Specific requirements

•Proven research skills in cellular and molecular immunology

•Excellent understanding and knowledge in immunology

•The ability to manage the day-to-day running of a research project

Essential

•A PhD or equivalent in a relevant branch of biosciences

•An excellent record of research productivity, commensurate to the applicant’s experience in cellular and molecular immunology

•Experience in immunology including flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISPOT and proliferation assay

•Experience in cellular biology techniques including RT-PCR and cloning

•Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, including the  ability to communicate effectively with funding bodies, peer-review groups, government agencies

•Evidence of experience of change-management, influencing and strategic vision

Desirable

•Experience of working in a laboratory environment

•Evidence of networking skills with the ability to build effective collaborative relationships

•Basic computer skills including use of Microsoft office packages, experience in data presentation and statistical analyses

•Evidence of working with animals

•Evidence of networking skills with the ability to build effective collaborative relationships

•Evidence of experience and vision to carry out scientific research in a multi-disciplinary environment
