Title : Senior post-doctoral researcher

Department : Data Science Centre, Division of Population Health Sciences, RCSI

Tenure : Specified purpose contract for 1.5 years

Salary : Level 2, Point 1 (欧元47,406)

Project

The DSC has been awarded a Health Research Board (HRB) Secondary Data Analysis (SDA) grant which is investigating the scope and nature of medication-related harm in older populations in Ireland with the Health Service Executive (HSE) National Quality Improvement Team. Medication- related harm can be common in older people and includes medication incidents, errors, adverse drug reactions (ADRs; harmful responses to medicine) and adverse drug events (ADEs; a broader term for injuries related to medicine use). Four inter-related work-packages are proposed using three prospective longitudinal ageing cohorts (Adverse Drug Reactions in an Ageing PopulaTion (ADAPT), Centre for Primary Care Research (CPCR) and The Irish LongituDinal Study of Ageing linked to pharmacy claims data (TILDA-PCRS). Work-package 1, will identify the high-risk medications and risk factors associated with ADR-related hospital admissions, develop risk prediction models, which identify older people at high risk of medication-related harm and compare these models to other existing models. Work-package 2 will establish the adverse health outcomes associated with medication-related harm and validate the newly developed risk prediction models. Work-package 3 will examine the effect of changes in high-risk medication, including discontinuation, switching of therapy or dose changes on reducing medication- related harm. Work-package 4 will explore extending this research internationally and assess the population risk of medication-related harm in Europe.

The role does not require prior knowledge of medications or medication-related harm as the project is managed by a clinical team, who will advise on the clinical interpretation of the data. The applicant should have a keen interest in working with secondary data and developing their statistical and quantitative modelling skills.

Specific duties:

The development of epidemiological and statistical models that identify medication-related harm in older people using secondary data

Review and compare existing epidemiological models on medication-related harm to the newly developed models and their application to the Irish setting using secondary data

Validation of risk prediction models which identify older people at high risk of medication-related harm using secondary data

To examine ways of reducing medication-related harm (discontinuation of medication, switching of therapies, dose changes) by applying epidemiological and statistical models to secondary data

Write up findings for peer-reviewed publications, reports/policy briefs and presentation to HSE and stakeholders with patient and public involvement (PPI) as required

Disseminate study findings at national and international conferences

Qualifications :

The candidate should preferably have a PhD or MSc in Statistics, Epidemiology, Health Service Research or a related quantitative subject. Candidates with a clinical or pharmacy background will also be considered.
