The position focuses on developing innovative methods for using enzymes and microorganisms for the biodegradation of chemicals. We are developing methods to move applied biodegradation out of an empirical regime and into a systematic science. In the past, we developed the Biocatalysis/Biodegradation System and Pathway Prediction Systems to lay the groundwork. In this project, we seek to develop systems to degrade complex hydrocarbon wastes using a limited number of bacteria encapsulated in structured polymeric materials. The project is multidisciplinary and involves microbiology, enzymology, polymer chemistry, and engineering. In addition to the collaborating laboratories, excellent facilities are available within the BioTechnology Institute, NMR facility, Mass Spec labs, and other advanced characterization facilities. There is also extensive cooperation with industry as the project involves basic science with rapid translation into applications.
The suitable candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering or related fields with specific emphasis on applied enzymology, cell encapsulation technology, and analytical chemical methods. The candidate must have excellent experimentation skills: No candidate without experimental experience in his/her Ph.D. studies will be considered for this position. Experience with analytical chemical techniques is highly desired.
