Under the direction of the principal investigator, the successful candidate will be involved in, but not limited to, the development of a flexible, high-performance, scalable electronics system for radionuclide imaging (OpenPET project http://openpet.lbl.gov). Other research projects include the development of a novel silicon photomultiplier and a time-of-flight PET camera with a timing resolution of less than 300 ps. The successful candidate is expected to have strong background in electronics design and implementation, particularly in the area of digital electronics and field programmable gate arrays. The successful candidate will be exposed to an excellent training and research environment at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of California at Berkeley.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in the development of the OpenPET electronics system.
Write FPGA firmware for the OpenPET electronics system.
Write computer programs that control the electronics system, acquire data, and analyze data.
Perform data analysis on the acquired data.
Prepare scientific presentations and manuscripts for publication in academic journals.
Research relevant literature.
Keep detailed laboratory notebooks.
Provide written reports to grant sponsoring agencies.
Participate in group meetings.
Additional responsibilities:
Participate in the development of a novel silicon photomulitplier.
Participate in the development of a time-of-flight PET camera.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
Ph.D. within the last 5 years in electrical engineering, physics, or related fields.
Experience in FPGA design and coding.
Familiar with analog, digital, and high-speed design.
Familiar with embedded system design and firmware development.
Familiar with analog-to-digital converter design.
Familiar with time-to-digital converter design
Competency in computer languages (e.g. C, C++, LabWindow, etc).
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Additional desired qualifications:
Experience in radiation detection and measurement.
Experience in circuit board design and layout.
Progress report preparation
NOTE:
This is a full time, one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon continued funding and satisfactory performance.
This position requires completion of a background check.
