Job Description
A postdoctoral fellow is sought to work on an interdisciplinary project involving the design, construction, commissioning, and utilization of a second generation of Automatic Continuous Online Monitoring of Polymerization reactions; SG-ACOMP. This novel instrumentation platform will be used to monitor the onset and evolution of polymer stimuli responsive behavior during synthesis. Collaborating polymer scientists will provide a variety of sophisticated synthetic procedures for producing stimuli responsive polymers. SG-ACOMP will consist of a ‘front-end’ for millifluidic dilution and conditioning of reactor contents, and the detector train will involve banks of multiple detectors that can operate in series and parallel modes. Stimuli will include variable temperatures, ionic strength, pH, and other solution conditions. Detectors include light scattering, viscosity and circular dichroism. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the development and prototyping of the SG-ACOMP and will also train associated students in instrument technology during the construction phase. After commissioning of SG-ACOMP, the postdoctoral fellow will continue to build up the system capabilities, including reactor feedback control capabilities in conjunction with collaborating experts in the area of reaction process control and be responsible for operating the instrument to monitor polymerization reactions as well as the training of collaborating students and scientists to monitor their reactions using the instrument. A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or closely related field is required, as well as experience in working with laboratory instrumentation and analysis of experimental data. The candidate must be able to prototype novel instrumentation, establish computer/instrument interfaces, and write data gathering and mathematical analysis programs. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in polymer science and engineering and at least a basic level of experience in bench scale chemistry operations.
Position is initially for one year, with annual renewal dependent upon performance and continued funding of the project
