Post Doctoral Research Fellow - Optides and Knottins for Therapeutics : Seattle, WA, United States

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, the Center's five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. The Hutchinson Center, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children's, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Join us and make a difference!

About the Department:
The Olson lab and the Optides program, a collaboration of multiple laboratories stretching across each division at the Center and supported by Project Violet, is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to join our research team. The program is focused on the discovery and advancement of novel therapeutics for rare diseases and diseases with significant unmet medical need using advanced murine models and state of the art resources. Optides are novel peptides based on small, highly bridged knottin scaffolds that have evolved in nature to possess drug-like properties. Our goal is to take advantage of these properties in naturally occurring knottin peptides and optimize them for specific disease targets.

Job Summary:
A highly motivated postdoctoral fellow is sought for a position to join the Optides research team in the Clinical Research Division. The team has developed a novel platform for expressing these peptides unique to our program and allows us to express and test thousands of variants, which previously was not feasible. The aim of this position is to join a team in the discovery of novel therapeutics for diseases with significant unmet clinical need. Potential programs include targets for treating autoimmune diseases, cancer cell metastasis and diseases that afflict the central nervous system. The ideal candidate will bring passion and intellectual aptitude to discover novel peptides and develop them into new treatment options for these devastating diseases.

Working with the senior members of the team, the fellow will design and implement a research program encompassing both in vitro and in vivo model systems and interrogate diverse libraries of Optides for therapeutic efficacy in treating the various stages of the disease. The successful applicant will be expected to leverage their own expertise and the resources available at the FHCRC to perform cutting edge scientific research. With the end goal of becoming a successful, independent researcher, (s)he will engage with their colleagues to develop and execute on innovative approaches to the discovery of novel therapeutics with potential to be translated into the clinic. The position will require contribution both as an individual and as part of a larger team, as well as mentorship to junior lab members.

Qualifications:
- A recent Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree is required, ideally in the areas of pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field
- Previous experience or knowledge of the pathophysiology of cancer and the immune system is highly desired
- Must have a strong publication record.
- Must have experience with assays amenable to drug discovery or pathway delineation
