Lund University was founded in 1666. Today, the University is ranked as one of the world´s top 100 and is Sweden´s most international higher education institution. The University has 47 000 students and 7 200 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Medicine at Lund University offers a wealth of research, postgraduate and undergraduate education programmes in the fields of medicine and health care. The Faculty encompasses 2,500 full-time students enrolled in different programmes, as well as 950 postgraduate students and 1,100 employees. Research spans across a broad area from basic experimental research to applied research, in order to answer questions related to clinical practice, the health sciences and society. The research and education are conducted in close cooperation with the University Hospitals in Lund and Malmö and located mainly into three centres: the Biomedical Centre (BMC) in Lund, Clinical Research Centre (CRC) in Malmö and Health Sciences Centre (HCS) a strategic location in the middle of the Öresund Region.

Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; http://www.ludc.med.lu.se) is one of 20 strong research programmes in Sweden to be awarded the 10-year Linnaeus grant by the Swedish Research Council in 2006. The aim of LUDC is to identify strategies for slowing disease progression in diabetes and, ultimately, to prevent the disease. LUDC includes several research groups in Malmö and Lund as well as several collaborators. The participating groups are all internationally renowned and form one of the strongest diabetes research environments world-wide. The position is administrated by the Deparment of Clinical Sciences, Malmö and is situated at the Clinical Research Centre, Malmö.

Subject area
Genetic Epidemiology

Specific subject description

The research group Diabetes and cardiovascular research – genetic epidemiology works with identification of genetic and environmental factors as well as blood biomarkers that affect the risk of cardiometabolic diseases (type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease) and cancer, and how such factors interact with each other to affect disease risk. Our research aim is to use this information to identify novel drug targets and better strategies for prevention of cardiometabolic diseases and cancer. We analyse large population based cohorts using for example genome-wide association studies (GWAS).

Job assignments
Genetic epidemiological analyses. Focus is in genetic analyses in large cohorts like the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study. The work includes planning, performing analyses and interpreting the results of genetic- and nutrition-epidemiological studies with main focus in genetic and bioinformatics analyses including development and implementation of new methods. Supervision of students and teaching can be part of the assignment.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

PhD degree, no earlier than three years before the date of advertisement (max 3 years). This period is extended correspondingly by parental leave, clinical service, and certain commissions of trust.

This is a qualifying appointment with primary orientation in research. The position is as an initial step in career and ranking of qualified applicants will be based on their scientific merits and future potential as scientist. The successful applicant must have demonstrated scientific expertise in the field of genetic epidemiology.

Doctoral examination in medical research or in related topic together with solid experience of genetic epidemiological research in the field of cardiometabolic diseases is a demand. In-depth knowledge of genetic statistics (for example GWAS analyses), genetics, biochemistry and bioinformatics are meritorious. Experience of genetic epidemiological analyses in population based materials is a demand.
