Research Associate in Smart Energy Demand Management

University of Bristol - School of Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Maths

The Computer Science Department at the University of Bristol invites applications for a Research Associate that combines IoT software development and machine learning/data analysis in the area of energy systems and leverages leading-edge contributions within the Bristol Collaboratory facility of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC). UKCRIC is a consortium of 14 universities which conducts infrastructure research, funded by EPSRC. The UKCRIC Bristol Collaboratory's contribution lies in collaboration and cooperation with Bristol's citizens and organisations in order to improve the city's infrastructure and its usage.

The role will be part of a team developing a management platform for campus energy systems. The main users of the platform are the University Estates team who will benefit from intelligent building energy monitoring and demand management applied within the context of local renewable energy networks. Besides development of the software platform, the candidate will identify requirements for additional IoT-sensing capability as needed. This work will involve research on the intelligent optimisation of building energy and demand management; as well as investigating user acceptability of different demand management techniques.

You will be working in close collaboration in a team under Dr Dan Schien at the University of Bristol. In your daily work, you will be expected to have a high degree of autonomy within the broad overall framework of the project.

Ideally, you hold, or expect to hold, a PhD in Computer Science, or demonstrate equivalent industry experience. You should have strong programming skills, along with knowledge of statistics, Machine Learning, systems engineering, networks and Smart Cities. You should have, or aim to develop, a strong track record of publications in international quality venues, making contributions both in Computer Science and Built Environment Sustainability literature. In addition, you will have excellent written and spoken communication skills including the ability to explain and share deep concepts.

The post is being offered on a full time, open-ended contract funded for up to 3 years.

It is expected that interviews will be held in July 2018, with a start date of August 2018.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Dan Schien: daniel.schien@bristol.ac.uk.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
