Postdoctoral Associate

A postdoctoral position is open for highly motivated candidates in the laboratory of Dr. Atul Chopra, MD, PhD, at the Harrington Discovery Institute, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. The Chopra lab discovered the fasting induced hormone asprosin that controls important aspects of mammalian physiology such as appetite, body weight and glucose homeostasis (Cell, 2016; Nature Medicine 2017). Current effort in the lab is focused on identification of the asprosin receptor and characterization of the anti-diabetic and anti-obesity effect of anti-asprosin monoclonal antibodies. The lab focuses on human genetics as an initial impetus but also specializes in basic biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, mouse genetics and physiology to enable the discovery process. The lab has recently moved to University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University after several years at Baylor College of Medicine.

This search is primarily targeted towards scientists who recently completed or are in the process of completing their PhD. Start date is flexible. Researchers with a passion in human and mouse genetics, molecular biology, metabolism, appetite modulation, diabetes and obesity, regardless of their training background, are welcome to apply. Expertise in any of the following areas is highly valued though not required:

  • In vivo mouse metabolism and phenotyping
  • Basic molecular biology and biochemistry
  • Bioinformatics expertise in the analysis of NGS datasets such as RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq etc.
  • Imaging-based cell biology techniques

As a comprehensive, integrated, academic health system, the research enterprise at University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University spans the full spectrum – from basic/translational to clinical/population research. The Harrington Project for Drug Discovery & Development, a unique $300 million initiative, continues to garner international praise as an innovative model for supporting drug discovery and development.

To apply, please send a cover letter describing past training, research interests and career goals, a detailed CV and contact information of three referees to Dr. Chopra at atul.chopra@case.edu
