Postdoctoral Researcher

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

Description

At this time we are looking for a highly motivated and experienced researcher to support the delivery of an important Health Education Authority (HEA) Funded North South Research Programme awarded to Professor Denis Harkin (https: // www. rcsi.com/people/profile/denisharkin), who is Principal Investigator of this project entitled the PROfessionalism Partnership for Education Research (PROPER) Study : a novel online express team-based learning approach to knowledge acquisition and skills development in medical professionalism for medical students with mixed-methods and thematic analysis.

The RCSI is a national leader in Professionalism as evidenced by the appointment of a Chair in Medical Professionalism in 2018: the first of its kind nationally. The Medical Council stipulates that professionalism is a key competency of medical practice and that medical schools should encourage research into the teaching of professionalism. A new programme in professionalism that spans the undergraduate and post graduate curriculum has been developed. A component of this programme is a new, integrated, explicit curriculum in professionalism extending from year 1 to year 5 of the undergraduate medical school.

Medical Professionalism describes the values, attitudes and relationships which underpin the trust the public has in doctors. Medical education's challenge is to prepare medical students to practice as doctors across increasingly diverse cultural environments, to work collaboratively in partnership with patients and families to achieve good healthcare outcomes for all. Medical Professionalism enhances the quality and safety of care for patients. This study aims to enhance education in medical professionalism with cultural sensitivity by co-educating medical students from Medical School's North and South, in a novel transdisciplinary team-based learning approach, and assess the impact on their professionalism and cultural awareness using mixed-methos and thematic analysis.

Building on existing collaboration between The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and Queen's University Belfast (QUB), the two respective largest Medical School, and combine that with cross-cultural expertise from RCSI-Bahrain and the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The work is operationalised via innovative cross-institutional approach to online express team based learning in core topis of relevance to medical professionalism, with a mixed-methods approach to analysis with quantitative, qualitative and thematic analysis. The intention would be to create a blue- print for HEI Medical Schools on the island of Ireland to develop, implement and assess collaborative education in Medical Professionalism, with particular attention to cultural awareness and sensitivity, and maximise the patient experience across the island of Ireland. The purpose of this role will also be to provide key support to the Chair of Medical Professionalism.
