Post Doctoral Researcher In Fibre Optic Sensors For Composite Manufacturing Monitoring (FS0626R)

University Of Hull

Description

Post Doctoral Researcher in Fibre Optic Sensors for Composite Manufacturing Monitoring

Reference: FS0626R

Campus: Hull Faculty/Area: Faculty of Science and Engineering School/Department: School of Engineering Subject Group/Team: Electrical and Electronic Engineering Salary: £35,326 to £40,927 per annum Fixed Term / 3 years Post Type: Full Time Closing Date: Sunday 23 October 2022 Interview Date: To be confirmed

Applicants are required to submit a current CV and covering letter outlining how their qualifications and experience meet the Person Specification in the Job Description below.

EPSRC funded research project led by the University of Hull with University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and with support from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy

The manufacture of large composite structures, such as wind turbine blades, involves complex mechano-thermo-chemical processes which occur during resin infusion and curing. Instrumentation to monitor the process is challenging because of the large size of the components, the difficulty of accessing the interior of the mould, the need to maintain structural integrity of the structures and the large number of measurands of interest. We have demonstrated fibre optic sensors able to individually monitor key process parameters. We have now received EPSRC funding to investigate how these sensors can be integrated into arrays, for simultaneous real time monitoring of multiple parameters at many measurement points.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work as part of the larger research team to investigate the integration of individual sensors and sensor bundles using combinations of Fibre Bragg Gratings, Long Period Gratings and other fibre optic sensors to monitor temperature, strain, resin flow rate, degree of cure etc. They will also consider the interconnection of sensor bundles into arrays including addressing the optimal use of optical bandwidth; time domain multiplexing and mesh configurations to determine which configurations give defined levels of robustness to damage. The performance of sensor bundles and associated calibration and signal processing will be experimentally evaluated for a range of existing and novel material combinations.

The research team has an extensive track record of research into monitoring complex manufacturing processes and strong links to the offshore wind industry through EPSRC programmes: Prosperity Partnership: A New Partnership in Offshore Wind, The Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy Hub and the Aura CDT in Offshore Wind Energy and the Environment. The team is based in the School of Engineering at the university of Hull but draws on expertise in the School of Natural Science and the Energy and Environment Institute. This project is in collaboration with composites manufacturing experts at the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with support from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy – the world's largest manufacturer of offshore wind turbines.

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject and have research experience in the application of fibre optic sensing systems and signal processing, including recent high quality publications on relevant topics. Experience of composite manufacturing processes would be an advantage.
