We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the Alzheimer's Research UK Oxford Drug Discovery Institute (ARUK-ODDI), University of Oxford. You will be part of the Organelle Biology team reporting to the team leader, Dr Margarida Ruas.
You will be responsible for providing the experimental and analytical expertise required to prosecute target validation and drug discovery for mechanisms regulating subcellular trafficking and organelle dysfunction in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, focusing on the Rab5 pathway. As an experienced molecular and cell biologist with a background in neurodegeneration, you will develop, establish, and pursue new techniques to support your research, and will provide expertise for the establishment of iPSC-derived neuronal cultures. In addition to your primary role to conduct laboratory research, you will need to supervise the laboratory work of students or RAs, taking responsibility for their training and health and safety. You will also take responsibility for key pieces of technology or administrative tasks on behalf of the team and wider ODDI, such as developing standard operating protocols, and risk assessments. You will carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partnering academic or industrial institutions and present research findings in discussions with collaborators, seminars and conferences.
It is essential that you hold or are close to completion of a PhD in Biology or related subject, together with research experience relevant to the field of endo-lysosomal biology and trafficking. You will have sufficient specialist knowledge to develop research projects and methodologies relevant to the field, including, for example, neuronal cell culture, ideally of iPSC-derived neuronal cultures, manipulation of gene expression (e. g. siRNA, CRISPRi/a, overexpression, lentiviral transduction), cell-based assays (fluorescent- based reporters, immunocytochemistry), and measurement of cellular phenotypes using confocal microscopy and high-content imaging. You will have in-depth knowledge of molecular biology techniques (e.g. design and manipulation of expression constructs, PCR, RT-qPCR, site-directed mutagenesis) as well as biochemical techniques (e.g. western blotting). The ability to manage in an organised manner the day-to-day tasks of independent experimental research, showing initiative is also essential. You will have an excellent attention to detail and the ability to work flexibly under varied workload and pressure to meet deadlines.
