The Langel Research Team is seeking a detail-oriented scientist to fulfill postdoctoral position(s) to study the role of breast milk antibodies against viral infections in neonates.

The maternal immune system protects developing offspring from harmful pathogens via transplacental transfer of IgG antibodies and breast milk immune components. While several vaccines given during pregnancy increase pathogen-specific IgG transfer across the placenta and reduce risk of disease in newborns, none were developed with the goal of increasing breast milk antibodies, particularly IgA which is the dominant antibody in colostrum and mature milk. In our group, we hypothesize that mucosal immunization during lactation may be an ideal strategy to stimulate innate and humoral antiviral components in secreted milk. The Langel Research team is using in vivo models, human clinical samples, and molecular-, cellular-, and immunologically-based techniques to test this hypothesis, to better define mammary gland and breast milk immunology, and to maximize neonatal protection against viral infections. The viruses we currently study include influenza, rotavirus, and norovirus.

This is a two-year fully funded position and will be held in the Center for Global Health and Diseases and Department of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine within an innovative and vibrant research environment and cutting-edge core facilities. In addition to leading projects assessing the role of mucosal immunization on breast milk antibody function and protection in the neonate, the postdoctoral scholar will write papers and contribute to grant development and will present at seminars and journal clubs. They will prepare reports for funding agencies and will have the opportunity to mentor students and other scholars in their own studies. Postdocs are also encouraged to apply for independent funding to pursue this project and projects that advance their own independent research.

This opportunity is ideal for a scholar with a Ph.D. and research experience from, but not limited to, one of the following fields: Immunology, Virology, Microbiology, Vaccinology, or related fields. Applicants with experience with influenza viruses, recombinant protein production, B cell sequencing, flow cytometry, and/or ferret models of influenza disease are encouraged to apply. We are enthusiastic about applicants who enjoy working collaboratively and can bring new perspectives and skills to our team. Additionally, the Langel Research Team is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable research environment. All candidates that share these core values are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, please email The Langel Research Team at langelresearchteam@gmail.com with (1) a cover letter that details your research interests and why you are applying to this opportunity in particular; (2) a CV; and (3) the names and contact information for three professional references. More information about our group can be found at www.langelresearchteam.com, or please contact Dr. Langel by email at langelresearchteam@gmail.com.
