Research Fellow in Synthetic and Analytical Chemistry

University of Leeds

Job Description

Are you interested in applying synthetic and analytical carbohydrate chemistry to solving important questions relevant to climate change? Do you want to perform cutting edge isotope studies to understand how forests respond to their climate? Join our interdisciplinary team that is aiming to unlock the full potential of tree ring oxygen isotope archives.

You will become part of a team consisting of chemists, Earth scientists, ecophysiologists, and isotope specialists led by Prof Roel Brienen and Prof Manuel Gloor (School of Geography), Prof Bruce Turnbull (School of Chemistry), and Dr Arnoud Boom (University of Leicester) to work on a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust, to develop new methods to understand how isotope ratios at specific positions in cellulose relates to climatic changes experienced by the trees.

Oxygen isotopes present in tree rings provide a historical record of water molecules that were incorporated into cellulose as the tree grew. However, the oxygen isotopes provide a mixed signal resulting from both the plant source water and plant physiological changes to their environment (primarily processes happening in leaves). To make full use of the information in tree ring oxygen isotope archives we require new methods that can disentangle climate information from tree physiology responses.

In this project you will develop and test novel tree ring isotope approaches to assess the responses of trees to climate. You will apply a combination of synthetic chemistry and analytical methods to separate and measure oxygen isotope ratios at specific positions around the glucose rings. You will work closely with a PhD student in the School of Geography, and with the Leicester Environmental Isotope Laboratory to evaluate the methods using tree ring samples from our existing collection, and trees grown under controlled laboratory conditions. This research is expected to provide new insights in plant ecophysiological responses and improve the interpretation of oxygen isotopes from tree rings for palaeoclimate studies.
