The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA, has an exciting Postdoctoral Researcher (Biologist or Computational Biologist) opportunity in the area of functional plant genomics available. The selected candidate will be involved in a project related to a new system for massively parallel sequencing-based functional identification and characterization of plant promoters in the Arabidopsis model.

Job Duties

Develop molecular strategies for large-scale sequence-based promoter identification. Establish growth systems, transfection strategies, and protocols for tissue/cell harvesting in the Arabidopsis model.

Computational identification, prioritization and molecular cloning of candidate promoter libraries into suitable vector systems.

Perform large-scale screens utilizing novel methods for promoter analysis.

In close collaboration with other staff, develop computational data mining strategies.

Analyze and summarize data and present findings at internal lab meetings and scientific
conferences.

Develop and coordinate downstream experimental studies derived from this work with outside collaborators.

Publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers and reports.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in biology, botany, genetics, genomics, or a relevant related field.

Solid understanding of general plant biology, preferably also plant developmental biology.

Experience in transgenic work in Arabidopsis or other model
plants a plus.

Experience in computational analysis of sequence data.

Experience with molecular biology techniques, such as DNA/RNA extraction and analysis methods.

Strong interest in genomic and functional genomic questions and in the use of computational strategies to derive biological insights from sequence data

Demonstrated scientific productivity through publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals.

Effective oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results

The U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI), supported by DOE's Office of Science, is committed to advancing genomics in support of DOE missions related to clean energy generation and environmental characterization and cleanup. DOE JGI, headquartered in Walnut Creek, Calif., provides integrated high-throughput sequencing and computational analysis that enable systems-based scientific approaches to these challenges.
