The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University invites applications to a position in the area of computational methods for genetic evaluation for a five-year period to begin 1st of January 2019.


The position
As an associate professor, the candidate is expected to develop a strong and competitive research program as well as contributing to joint research in collaboration with colleagues at the institute.

The incumbent will need to pursue internationally recognized research in computational methods for genetic evaluation (methods based on statistical models like linear mixed models, hierarchical models with random effects, etc) and we in particular welcome applicants with interest in method development for large scale genetic evaluation using dense genomic information.


The candidate
The successful candidate is expected to complement existing strengths of the Department, to contribute to Departmental activities and to engage in scientific interaction with academic staff both inside and outside the department. The candidate must have

  • Ph.D. degree in quantitative genetics, animal breeding, statistics, computer science or similar, followed by solid post-doc experience,
  • demonstrated excellence in research and scholarship in the field of statistical genetics or computational methods for genetic evaluation,
  • demonstrated high level skills in scientific programming
  • documented excellent skills in oral and written English communication,
  • experience on collaboration with commercial partners.

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • deliver innovative research of the highest international standard
  • collaborate with a diverse group of researchers both internally and internationally,
  • collaborate with partners in commercial breeding organizations,
  • involvement in supervising and teaching master and PhD students,
  • attract national and international competitive research funding from external funding bodies.


Place of work and area of Employment
The Center for Quantitative Genetics and Genomics (QGG) (www.qgg.au.dk) at Aarhus University (AU) is a major center for research and education in quantitative genetics, quantitative genomics, and animal and plant breeding. It comprises 14 senior staff and a large group of PhDs and post docs. The center is part of the Department for Molecular Biology and Genetics and is located at the AU Foulum Campus. The place of work is Blichers Allé 20, DK-8830 Tjele, but there is a planned move to the AU Aarhus Campus in 2021. QGG provides a very dynamic and internationally orientated environment with strong collaborations with relevant industrial partners and with several other leading international research groups in the area.


The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics
The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Aarhus University and comprises research within the areas of Gene Expression, Molecular Medicine, Structural Biology, Systems Biology, Plant Molecular Biology and Quantitative Genetics. There are currently 220 full time scientific staff and 140 PhD students. The department is responsible for two educations: Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine with a yearly uptake of 160 students in total. Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
