  Short summary

An exciting opportunity to be part of a pioneering biomedical research institute, dedicated to innovation and science. A postdoctoral research post in the laboratory of Steve Gamblin is now available. We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to use structural biology methods to determine the molecular mechanisms leading to transcriptional activation through the activity of chromatin remodelling protein complexes. This research builds upon our past record of research into chromatin modification complexes using a structural and biophysics-based approach and is part of an initiative between the Francis Crick Institute and Astrazeneca. The successful applicant will use a wide range of techniques from molecular biology and biochemistry through biophysics, enzymology and structural techniques such as CryoEM and X-Ray crystallography. For more information about our research, please visit the external lab website: https://www.crick.ac.uk/research/labs/steve-gamblin. The successful applicant will have good communication and organisational skills and a PhD in a relevant area (or be in the final stages of completion).

  Project scope

o    Multiple processes are coordinated to define the cells gene expression program. We have a long-standing interest into how chromatin structure impacts transcriptional activity, with a particular interest in the role of chromatin modification complexes. Higher organisms have evolved increasingly complex multi-protein assemblies to faithfully coordinate chromatin modifications to establish the cells program. In this project we will investigate how the nucleosome is remodelled when making the transition between chromatin states associated with gene silencing and activation.

o    The project will focus on determining at both the structural and functional level how the basic helicase activity within the remodelling complex has been altered in higher organisms by the incorporation of additional or more highly evolved subunits. The aim is to better understand the impact of mutations identified in disease states on fundamental processes.

o    We are looking for a Postdoctoral researcher to join our team. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in using quantitative methods in biochemistry and biophysics alongside structural techniques, X-Ray crystallography and Cryo EM, in order to establish a validated molecular model.

  About us

The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to translate discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases.

An independent organisation, its founding partners are the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, UCL (University College London), Imperial College London and King’s College London.

The Crick was formed in 2015, and in 2016 it moved into a new state-of-the-art building in central London which brings together 1500 scientists and support staff working collaboratively across disciplines, making it the biggest biomedical research facility under in one building in Europe.

The Francis Crick Institute will be world-class with a strong national role. Its distinctive vision for excellence includes commitments to collaboration; developing emerging talent and exporting it the rest of the UK; public engagement; and helping turn discoveries into treatments as quickly as possible to improve lives and strengthen the economy.

o    If you are interested in applying for this role, please apply via our website.

o    The closing date for applications is 14 April 2019 at 23:30.

o    All offers of employment are subject to successful security screening and continuous eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.
