Under the direction of founding director Dr. Jeffrey Kordower, the goal of the Edson Foundation and NDRC is to fund research and scholars that will aid in new discoveries and solutions to better the quality of life for people affected by neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

The NDRC prides itself on producing highly impactful research through collaborative science. The selected candidate will work on projects related to identifying novel therapeutic agents for Alzheimer’s disease using in vitro cell-based studies, in vivo rodent work, and examination of post-mortem brain tissue from nonhuman primates and human patients.

We will begin reviewing applications December 31st, 2021 and will continue to review incoming applications on a biweekly basis until the position is filled. To apply for this position, candidates must submit their application through Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/98359 (emailed applications will not be considered).

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. by January 1st, 2021, in behavioral and/or molecular neuroscience, neurobiology, and/or a related field. The Ph.D. also must have been earned within the last four years.

Desired Qualifications:

• Must be highly motivated and have prior experience in neurobiology, with a strong focus in neurodegenerative diseases.

•Must have a strong background in wet lab techniques such as immunohistochemistry, immunoblots, tissue homogenization and qPCR.

•A strong background in biostatistics and bioinformatics is a plus.

•Motivated to learn skills that implement a multidisciplinary approach, from behavioral to molecular levels of study.

•Must be a team player, as collaborations are a key driver to produce impactful research at the NDRC.

Essential Duties:

•Rodent handling, behavioral assessment, drug delivery and tissue collection.

•Microscopy, unbiased stereology, confocal imaging, and molecular biology methods.

•Data analysis, manuscript preparation, and oral presentations

•Writing grant proposals

•Mentor undergraduate and graduate students

•Actively participate in journal clubs and lab meetings

Working Environment:

•Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks; to manage conflict; to interact in a team environment; and to communicate through verbal and written work.

Department Statement:

The Velazquez laboratory at ASU is focused on identifying the early molecular events that are triggered by environmental factors that induce the progression of the disease. Our lab is also interested in drug discovery and dietary supplementation of B-like vitamins as a method to prevent disease progression. The Velazquez uses a variety of model systems, including invitro cell models of disease, transgenic mouse models, and both nonhuman primate and human brain tissue from patients, to carry ourour research. Our ultimate goal is to progress science while also helping those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases.

For the seventh year in a row, ASU has been named the most innovative University in the nation, recognizing the university’s culture of groundbreaking research an well as its commitment to helping students thrive in college and beyond. U.S. News and World Report has named ASU as the most innovative university all seven years the category has existed.

ASU Knowledge Enterprise advances research, innovation, strategic partnerships, entrepreneurship, and international development. Our success arises from interdisciplinary research; an entrepreneurial approach that is embedded in every school and department; and a commitment to transform society in a positive way. http://research.asu.edu/ (http://research.asu.edu/)

The Biodesign institute is home to the ASU-Banner Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center (NDRC); this is a collaboration between ASU and Banner officially entered into in July 2015. The goal of NDRC is to develop a world-class research center that houses basic and translational researchers to address etiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. We share a strong desire to collaborate in an effort to advance scientific progress against Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, to make meaningful contributions to the understanding and promotion of healthy existence, to establish an organization that unites clinical and basic research in an effort to bridge the gap between discovery, and delivery of health care of affected populations. NDRC serves as the basic research arm and Banner Health serves as the clinical research arm of the partnership.
