Postdoc Position in particle dynamics (m/w/d)
Alfred Wegener Institute
Description
Context The biological pump and its transport of particulate organic matter (POM) from the photic zone to the ocean floor are key regulators of the transfer of atmospheric C02 to Iong term storage of carbon. Organic matter produced by phytoplankton and bacteria undergoes aggregation and binds to particles (e.g., cells and detritus), which contribute to deposition of carbon and creates a major sink in the global carbon cycle. Despite of the significant role of aggregation, very little is known about the binding mechanisms and kinetics of particle formation in the ocean.
Your Profile We are open to applications of highly-qualified candidates from various research backgrounds with previous research experience on molecular or particle interactions. We seek previous experience in, for example, the empirical study of particle formation by time resolved dynamic light scattering, relaxation NMR Spectroscopy and Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy and other methods or experience with theoretical tools such as molecular dynamics (MD), Monte Carlo (MC) Simulations and analytical theory.
Requirements
PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, or related fields.
ideally previous experience studying particle dynamics (interaction Observations using NMR, DLS)
Alternatively, strong expertise in molecular simulations
Good English language skills and interest in working in an international and interdisciplinary team.
Further Information You will be part of the Ecological Chemistry section at the AWI in Bremerhaven, working with experts in the fields of analytical chemistry, computational modeling, natural products chemistry, ecology, and physiology. You will have access to outstanding facilities and world class infrastructure (HPC, HR-LC-MS, NMR) in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
This position is limited to 2 years. An extension of the project is subject to the success of the initial funding period and subsequent extension grant application. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TV-L), up to salary Level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
For further information, please contact Dr. Jan Tebben (jtebben@awi.de) or Prof. Dr. Boris Koch (bkoch@hs-bremerhaven.de).
