Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Postdoctoral Appointee Researcher for the Rad Hard CMOS Technology Department located in our Albuquerque, NM facility. This position is a temporary, full-time opportunity. The candidate selected in this position will be required to obtain and maintain a DOE-granted “L-level” security clearance. Security clearance is not required to start.

Department Description

The Rad Hard CMOS Technology Department is responsible for developing, integrating, characterizing, and ensuring the reliability of radiation-hardened microelectronics fabricated in the Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications (MESA) facilities. Advanced device development activities are also a significant part of the team's work, focusing on end-of-the roadmap technologies such as resistive memories, graphene, optoelectronics, and heterogeneous integration. Power microelectronics characterization and reliability are a growing area of expertise.

Job Summary

A Postdoctoral Appointee opening exists for an exceptional candidate to conduct leading-edge research in the area of advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) and vertical power devices. This research will support several new DOE-funded programs in wide-bandgap power electronics. The candidate's primary responsibility will be to electrically characterize, understand, and model the static and dynamic behavior of high-power GaN-based switches. He or she will work with physical science researchers to model the effects of trapping on the dynamic current-voltage behavior of these devices. Models will be used to improve device design and reliability, and will push the state-of-the-art. Results will be published in journal articles and conference presentations.

Post Doc Hiring Program

The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval.

Required

The candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or an equivalent field, and have a demonstrated record of device research as evidenced by publications, patents, and/or conference presentations. Knowledge of typical semiconductor electrical characterization equipment is required. The desire and ability to write papers for publication in refereed journals is required.

Desired

Programming experience with software such as LabVIEW and MATLAB, as well as familiarity with TCAD software such as Silvaco Atlas, is highly desirable. Organizational skills as well as the ability to interact in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary research team environment.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
