University of Florida - Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine - Gainesville, FL

The laboratory of Dr. Maureen Goodenow is seeking applicants for a post doctoral position in the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine in the College of Medicine at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, FL. The Goodenow lab focus currently involves high-throughput next generation genomics, bioinformatics and systems biology applied to human immunity and pathogen interactions from a global health perspective. The major research focus of this position will develop novel bioprofiles for two related projects using a systems biology approach. The first project will examine marijuana use and immune dysfunction in primary human macrophages ex vivo and the second project will examine immune dysfunction and neurocognitive impairment in HIV -1 infected adolescents. Combination of systems biology and studies of human peripheral blood provide an unprecedented opportunity to discover global profiles of complex systems that are unbiased by preconceived paradigms. Outcomes will translate to improved diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of HIV -1 associated neurocognitive impairment in adolescents.

Primary responsibilities will include 1) developing data analysis strategies, implementing algorithms, and deploying computational software for the exploration of large data sets; 2) management and analysis of large-scale genomics datasets, in particular microarray and sequencing data, utilizing microarray analysis and pathway analysis programs (e.g. Genego) 3) participating in bioinformatics applications developments.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry or other relevant field. Candidate should have extensive experience with large-scale microarray, proteomic, genomic data analysis, as well as thorough knowledge of the standard software packages used for these purposes. Effective communication is a must with the ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in virology, cell culture, and molecular biology is a plus. Expertise in the analyzing high-dimensional data (-omics data) using machine learning/data mining techniques is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with strong programming skills in both general-purpose languages (e.g. C/C++, Ruby, Perl) and scientific computing (e.g. R, MATLAB ).
