POSITION IDENTIFICATION

Location : MACC Fund Research Center
Workweek : 8:00am – 5:00pm with some flexibility to accommodate changing business needs.

POSITION PURPOSE
Conduct advanced research for NIH funded projects in the field of experimental bone marrow transplantation. Projects available for study include the pathophysiology of graft versus host disease (GVHD) (Chen et al, Blood 114, 2009), the role of proinflammatory cytokines in GVHD biology (Das et al, Blood 113, 2009), the pathophysiological basis for the autoimmunity that occurs as a consequence of GVHD (Chen et al, Blood, 110, 2007), and the modulation of graft versus leukemia reactivity post allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Design and conduct of experiments in the field of immunology as it pertains to questions in the area of bone marrow transplantation, including but not limited to small animal experimentation, cellular assays of immune function, molecular biology approaches to enhance understanding of immune mechanisms, and flow cytometric assays for the proposes of immune monitoring.
2. Oversee interpretation of experimental findings and independently be able to direct research projects as needed to address new and emerging questions.
3. Collaborate with principle investigator in determining study design and appropriate experimental approaches to evaluate specific scientific questions.
4. Develop new methodologies for lab procedures. Review existing protocols and make modifications as necessary to adhere to state of the art techniques.
5. Participate in meetings with principle investigator and research staff and evaluate validity of data, develop methodologies and evaluate lab procedures, propose new experiments as needed.
6. Plan and perform statistical analyses using advanced techniques; determine and review statistical findings with investigators and recommend design modifications in experimental protocols.
7. Prepare manuscripts for submission to relevant journals for publication.
8. Assist in the training of students, residents and fellows in specific research protocols; develop training materials as required.
9. Assist in the writing of grants for submission to funding agencies such as the NIH.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis
Education: PhD in a scientific field.
Experience: Prior research experience in the field of cellular immunology preferred. Experience in working with animals is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge in animal handling and small animal surgery preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Must have strong background in methods of quantitative analysis. Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required. Knowledge of advanced scientific approaches and methodologies. Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol. Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise. Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures. Ability to design, organize and coordinate scientific research projects.

Manual Dexterity : Work requires definite skilled and accurate physical operations requiring some closely coordinated performance.
Physical Effort: Work requires handling average weight materials or equipment, but not for sustained periods.

Hazards : Injury may require doctor’s care. Time lost of part of day may be to receive medical treatment.
