Research Associate: Modelling the Effects of Bioactive Compound Mixtures Using Cheminformatics and Bioinformatics Approaches (Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 4 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate to join the research group led by Dr Andreas Bender at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Science Informatics (http://www-ucc.ch.cam.ac.uk/) at the University of Cambridge on 1 February 2014 (or as soon as possible thereafter). This ERC-funded project will utilize cheminformatics and bioinformatics approaches for modelling the effect of mixtures of bioactive compounds, an area of importance both in the medical field (e.g. for combination treatments), as well as consumer safety (e.g. for toxicity modeling).

The research associate will be based at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics (http://www-ucc.ch.cam.ac.uk/), part of the Department of Chemistry (http://www.ch.cam.ac.uk), which is home to about 40 scientists in the cheminformatics and bioinformatics field. The research group which the successful candidate will be based in currently comprises 15 PhD students (plus postdocs and visitors etc.), and modeling bioactive mixtures of compounds will be a future focus for the group, with another 3 project members to be recruited in the near future. The post-doctoral research associate to be recruited represents an integral part of this project and will be able to (and is expected to) co-supervise other project members in
the near future.

Applicants should have (or should be about to obtain) a relevant PhD in the fields of cheminformatics, bioinformatics, scientific data analysis, machine learning, computer science, or related fields. Expertise in the areas of scientific programming (e.g. in Python, Perl, C, Java, etc.), handling chemical and biological information in databases, and data mining and analysis packages (such as R) are essential for the post, as is a general understanding of chemical and biological information. Previous experience in the analysis of bioactivity data (such as conventional high-throughput screening data) or biological readouts (e.g. from high-content screens, or transcriptomics) would be highly advantageous, as is previous demonstrated successful experience in leading projects and working in interdisciplinary teams.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Andreas Bender (email: ab454[]cam.ac.uk).

Applications should include a CV, publications list, contact details for three professional referees and a completed CHRIS/6 form, Parts I and III only (downloadable from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/), and should be sent to Susan Begg, Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1EW (email: smb28[]cam.ac.uk).

Please quote reference MA01849 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.

The Department holds an Athena SWAN bronze award for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine.
