The Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory offers a postdoctoral opportunity to join the Bell research group which is dedicated to the synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of novel catalysts that can be used to produce chemicals and fuels in an energy efficient manner. The ultimate goal of this work is to develop a first-principles understanding of the relationships between the catalyst composition/structure and catalyst activity/selectivity. The postdoctoral fellow will work on the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of novel catalysts involved in the electrochemical oxidation of water, the reduction of protons, and the reduction of carbon dioxide.
Responsibilities:
• Perform synthesis and characterization of catalysts and the analysis of heterogeneous systems involving a solid and gas or liquid.
• Prepare research publications (both oral and written) on experimental results.
• Communicate results in group meetings and participate in professional activities, as appropriate.
• Develop successful working relations with other JCAP groups including the modeling and simulation efforts.
• Assist PI in programmatic documentation, and present and publish high quality papers.
• May characterize materials using modern surface science techniques (XPS, SEM) and synchrotron radiation absorption techniques (XANES, EXAFS).
• May direct the work of graduate students and undergraduate assistants in the laboratory.
Qualifications:
• Recent Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science
• Experience with the synthesis and characterization of catalysts and the analysis of heterogeneous systems involving a solid and gas or liquid
• Experience preparing oral and written experimental results
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and with self-motivation
• Preferred - Experience with the characterization of materials using modern surface science techniques (XPS. SEM) and synchrotron radiation absorption techniques (XANES, EXAFS).
Application materials requested: Resume/CV, cover letter, and three reference contacts
Notes: This is a 1-year postdoctoral fellow appointment with the possibility of renewal not to exceed a maximum of 5 years of cumulative postdoctoral experience. Extension of the appointment depends on successful performance, continued funding, and ongoing need. The position is located at the JCAP-North site at 2929 Seventh Street in Berkeley, California. A background check is required. (The posting was updated October 3, 2013.)
About Us
JCAP is a Solar Fuels Innovation Hub - a research effort built on the premises that a critical mass of creative scientists and engineers working side by side can accomplish more, faster, than researchers working separately. This proactive approach to managing and conducting research is essential. JCAP is Department of Energy funded with physical location of their major partners at Caltech (JCAP South) and LBNL (JCAP North). Learn more at http://www.solarfuelshub.org/ .
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, LBNL’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages LBNL for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
