Job Description

The Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences at Auburn University is seeking candidates for a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist in the field of climate variability and change with a special focus on agriculture in the Southeastern United States. This a 1 year, limited term position funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds, need and satisfactory performance up to a maximum of four years. The position is a 12-month, benefits eligible, non-tenure accruing and is available immediately.

We seek a candidate that would be involved in conducting research for the purpose of identifying how climate variability/change conditions and extreme events could impact agricultural ecosystems and stakeholders profitability. The Postdoctoral Scientist will be expected to work closely with members of the Southeast Climate Consortium focusing on “building climate resilience among agricultural community in the Southeast US” and to also travel frequently to meetings across the Southeast US to work on the applications aspects of the project with collaborators and stakeholders there.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: preparation of journal articles for publication, contribute to research motivated by community needs and provide hands-on operational and technical support to stakeholders on the identification and use of decision support tools to increase climate resilience; assist in the preparation of extension publications; assist with workshops and field days with producers, and demonstrate adaptation and mitigation strategies to climate variability and change; prepare technical reports; perform various other duties as assigned by supervisor; and assist principal investigator. A high level of productivity for peer‐reviewed publications is expected. The candidate will contribute to the development of climate-based decision support tools on the AgroClimate web-based information system: http://www.agroclimate.org/. 

The minimum qualifications are an earned Ph.D. in agricultural, biological, Earth Science, climatology, or a similar field from an accredited institution with a strong interest in Agrometeorology/Agroclimatology. Research studies must have emphasis on the identification of adaptation and mitigation strategies to climate variability/climate change with emphasis on agriculture in addition to assembling and intercomparing observational data with climate models data for assessing the impact of climate on agriculture. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and effectively in a large interdisciplinary research team, possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to be able to regularly communicate project results. In addition, the successful candidate must possess a high level of analytical, statistical, organizational and planning skills. The applicant must have excellent multi‐tasking skills as they will provide support to other members of the project team. 
The candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the U.S. by the start date and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Desirable qualifications include experience studying climate variability and seasonal climate predictions, crop growth modeling.
