POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN DESIGN FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS 


The position is fixed-term and will be filled until 31.7.2019. The starting date is preferably as soon as possible but is negotiable. Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the chosen person following the salary system of Finnish universities.

Main tasks and requirements

The position is located at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography. ELO consists of two degree programmes: the Degree Programme in Film and Television and the Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television. The Department endorses artistic practice-based research with questions emerging from experiences in artistic and production work. The research activities aim at producing new theoretical and practical knowledge, insights and approaches on filmmaking and scenography. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts Helsinki and with other national and international higher education institutions specialized in arts. The Department of Film, Television and Scenography is looking for a postdoctoral researcher whose artistic research and teaching interests address expanded and/or applied scenography. Expanded scenography is located at the intersections of theatre, performing arts, architecture, exhibition, visual arts, and media and it is understood as a social and cultural product, interdisciplinary and participatory projects, actions and urban interventions. 

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to conduct high quality research in collaboration with the research teams in Aalto. In addition the postdoctoral researcher will participate in the teaching of relevant study projects on all the degree levels. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to collaborate with future development projects and to tutor the doctoral candidates engaged in such projects. The majority of work time will be allocated for research but about one third of the time needs to be reserved for these complementary tasks.

Qualified candidates for the postdoctoral position hold a doctoral degree and have adequate experience in artistic research in the field of design for the performing arts or other field relevant to the position. Ability for multidisciplinary research is considered an advantage. Applicants are expected to be at the early stages of their academic careers and show potential for academic development. In addition, the applicants are expected to have fluent skills in English.
