Department Description
The Systems Biology department, located in Livermore, California, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare, and alternative energy. The department contains a multidisciplinary team of approximately 20 staff, postdocs and technologists with expertise in microbiology, phycology, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry. The basic research activities in the department are focused on developing a systems-level understanding of cellular signaling pathways, host-pathogen interactions, and microbiomes relevant to human health and the environment. Applied research activities are focused on enzyme and microbial engineering for biofuels development, biological detection, and medical diagnostics. Key sponsors include the DOE Office of Science, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Institutes of Health, and the Sandia LDRD Program.
Job Description
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.
Job Summary
We have a post-doctoral opening for an outstanding bioinformatics researcher in programs focused on biodefense research and bioenergy production. Our projects involve bioinformatic analyses of metagenomic, transcriptomic, and other datasets for sequence-based discovery, detection, and characterization of pathogens and host response mechanisms.
Minimum Qualifications
This position requires a PhD in bioinformatics, biology or computer science, or a related scientific discipline. Other required qualifications include (1) a strong publication record; (2) experience in bioinformatics algorithms, databases, and software tools that are commonly used in the curation, alignment, assembly, and annotation of sequencing data sets ; (3) familiarity with ultrahigh-throughput sequencing technology and the management and processing of large datasets; (4) experience in software development, programming and statistical analysis (e.g., Perl, C/C++, Python, R); (5) the ability to work with a diverse multidisciplinary team to solve complex problems; (6) ability to track and incorporate innovative tools and methods in the public domain, and (7) excellent communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
Desired qualifications include familiarity with one or more of the following: molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, fungal and bacterial microbiology.
Security Clearance
No clearance required.
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require aDOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
