Postdoctoral Training Fellow : London, United Kingdom

Postdoctoral Training Fellow
Costa Lab

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 4 years on Crick Terms and Conditions of Employment.
Salary is competitive with benefits.

The Francis Crick Institute is a new research institute with a distinct vision of how biomedical research is conducted. It is one of the most significant projects in UK biomedical science for a generation. The institute’s laboratories have an international reputation for cutting edge research into basic biology and are committed to training the next generation of research scientists. The four-year Postdoctoral Training programme is part of this commitment and nearly half of the Postdoctoral Fellows leave to set up their own research groups. Postdocs also benefit from living and working in one of the world’s greatest scientific, cultural and cosmopolitan capital cities.

The Francis Crick Institute (the Crick) is a partnership between the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Wellcome Trust, University College London, Imperial College London and King’s College London.

The institute will be a leading centre of biomedical research and innovation. It will promote connections between researchers and disciplines and between academic institutions, healthcare organisations and industry. Dedicated to research excellence, the institute will have the scale, vision and expertise to tackle the most challenging scientific questions underpinning health and disease. It will have a strong national role, training scientists and developing ideas for public good. Due to open in 2016, the Crick will be located in a new purpose built research centre in central London, adjacent to St Pancras International station and will house some 1,250 researchers and 250 support staff.

We seek a talented and motivated postdoc to join Alessandro Costa’s Molecular Machines laboratory.

Organisation

Dr Costa’s laboratory focuses on the structure and function of the eukaryotic replication machinery. Research techniques used in the laboratory include: single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, heterologous expression, reconstitution and functional characterisation of multi-component enzymes.

Objectives

The research aims to understand how the eukaryotic replication machinery can duplicate chromatinisedDNA. In this project, some of the specific aims could include but not limited to:

• Production and functional characterisation of eukaryotic replisome components
• In vitro reconstitution of protein-DNA assemblies
• Structure determination by high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy

Person Specification

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic and Collegial, in addition to the following:
Essential

• PhD in Biochemistry / Structural Biology or in the final stages of PhD submission
• Good knowledge and experience in protein expression and purification
• Expertise in protein biochemistry / reconstitution of macromolecular assemblies
• Track record of writing papers as evidenced by publications or submitted manuscripts in referred journals
• Evidence of data presentation at scientific meetings
• Experience of experimental design
• Ability to work independently and also capable of interacting within a group

Desirable

• Experience with cryo-electron microscopy or crystallography
• Experience with the baculovirus or yeast expression systems
• Experience with protein-DNA interaction assays

All Postdoctoral Training Fellows are expected to lead on their own projects and contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis, both within the laboratory and with collaborators. The ability to work as part of a team is essential.
