Postdoctoral Researcher - Development of III-Nitride Laser Lighting

 

Job Description

The Solid State Lighting and Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC) at the University of California, Santa Barbara is a world leader in wide bandgap based materials and device research. SSLEEC faculty members Shuji Nakamura (2014 Nobel Laureate in Physics), Steven DenBaars, Jim Speck, Ram Seshadri, and Claude Weisbuch have been tasked by the US Department of Energy’s ARPA-E program to develop the next-generation of solid-state lighting systems based on lasers (http://arpa-e.energy.gov/?q=news-item/secretary-moniz-awards-125-million-41-transformational-energy-technology-projects-ahead).

We are seeking to hire a postdoctoral researcher to develop optically integrated phosphor/III-Nitride-based high-power blue laser diode-pumped white light source. Specific responsibilities for the position include system modeling (optical, materials, and thermal modeling of lasers/phosphors/optics), optical system fabrication, photometric metrology, and packaging.

The researcher will work with a team of 5-6 graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff scientists to develop the laser-based white light emitter. Successful candidates should be comfortable working in a team-based research effort with well defined goals and approaches and an aggressive schedule. Candidates should be able to clearly communicate their ideas, experiments, and results in both written and oral form.

Minimum qualifications:
- Ph.D in Optical Sciences and Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Physics
- Specialization in optical systems, related photometric studies, optics and micro-optics design, optoelectronic semiconductor devices – e.g. lasers, LEDs, solar cells

Desired experience:
- Optical systems: design and photometric measurements
- Classical and Free-form optics, micro-optics, immersion lenses, beam-forming optics
- Materials and device modeling of semiconductor devices
- Light propagation simulations (e.g. LightTools, COMSOL, FDTD, etc.)
- GaN and Phosphors for device applications
- Cleanroom fabrication of devices including photolithography, embossing, dry etching, CMP, and singulation
- Package design, including heat management and optics
- Device testing, including characterization of optical, electrical, and thermal properties
- Optical device testing, including characterization of optical, electrical and thermal properties
- Scintillator and similar fluorescence-based detectors
