Applications are invited for a 1 year post doc position at Department of Bioscience, Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark. The position is available from 1 January 2018.

Title
Environmental stress adaptation in invertebrates

Research area and project description
Evolutionary biology, ecophysiology and molecular biology

The successful applicant will participate in the Department’s work on evolution, ecophysiology and molecular biology with emphasis on adaptation to thermal stress, responses to thermal stress (acclimation and hardening) and the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptive responses. The work includes studies of gene expression and sequence analysis, but also whole-organism studies of performance, in invertebrate ectotherms.

Detailed studies of stress responses have shown that organisms have developed sophisticated physiological adaptations to combat environmental stress. The project aims to identify and investigate candidate systems for studying adaptation and responses to environmental stress. To achieve the aim of the project a focus on molecular investigations combined with information from population level and physiology will be applied to achieve an integrated functional understanding. The main responsibilities of the successful candidate will be performing and analyzing RNA-seq studies in model and non-model organisms.

The work will be done under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Jesper Givskov Sørensen (AU), supported by a grant from Aarhus University Research Foundation.

Qualifications and specific competences
The successful applicant should have a PhD degree in Biological Science and a proven track record of first author peer reviewed publications within relevant fields. Relevant research experience could be in eco-physiology, molecular ecology and evolutionary biology. The candidate should be enthusiastic for learning new techniques and able to work independently. Experience with transcriptomics and bioinformatics is an advantage. Strong analytical skills, experience with laboratory studies of invertebrates or other ectotherms and the ability to communicate scientific work to international journals is expected.

Place of Employment and Place of Work
The place of employment is Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Denmark, and the place of work is the section for Genetics, Ecology and Evolution, Ny Munkegade 114-116, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark

Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.
