Research Associate in Organic Quantum Integrated Devices

Imperial College London - Centre for Cold Matter, Department of Physics

South Kensington Campus

Fixed Term: 2 years available from 1 August 2018

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position to carry out research into quantum optical applications of single organic molecules coupled to photonic devices. The successful candidate will join the Centre for Cold Matter in the Department of Physics and work under the supervision of Dr Alex Clark and Professor Ed Hinds. The group has a number of ongoing projects including Organic Quantum Integrated Devices (ORQUID), funded under the recent QuantERA Initiative, Quantum Science with Ultracold Molecules (QSUM), an EPSRC programme grant in collaboration with Durham University and University of Oxford, and Microcavity Molecular Photon Source, also funded by EPSRC.

The postholder will be responsible for designing and carrying out experimental measurements of the optical, spectroscopic, structural, and electrical properties of molecules and the photonic devices they are to be coupled to, both at ambient and cryogenic temperature. They will be expected to plan and carry out research, to write up results for publication and oral presentations, and to liaise with collaborators within and outside Imperial College. They will also assist in the maintenance of lab facilities and the administration of the research team, as well as support research students. This project will involve a high degree of teamwork and interdisciplinary research.

The following are essential requirements for the role:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience of the experimental characterisation of single quantum emitters.
  • Experience of working with and characterising nanophotonic devices.
  • Experience working with cryogenic systems.
  • Excellent communication and team-working skills.
  • The ability to plan and conduct research independently.
  • The ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication.

The following are desirable requirements for the role:

  • Demonstrable experience of coupling single emitters to cavities/waveguides.
  • A demonstrated capability in modelling and fabrication of nanophotonic devices.
  • Knowledge of quantum optics and single photon sources/detectors.
  • Experience of tuning the emission frequency of single quantum emitters.
  • Experience in using software for data analysis, instrumentation, and computer programming.
