The MAX DELBRÜCK CENTER FOR MOLECULAR MEDICINE IN THE HELMHOLTZ ASSOCIATION (MDC) is inviting applications for the position of:

  Independent Junior Group Leader in

Computational or Theoretical Approaches for Large-Scale Human Disease Data (Reg.-no 10988/2018)

The MDC is a biomedical research institute dedicated to interdisciplinary research in the areas of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases, Cancer, and Function/Dysfunction of the Nervous System. As a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers, the MDC is funded by the Federal Government of Germany and the Senate of Berlin. To establish major expertise in the field of Systems Biology, the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) was founded in 2008 as a strategic expansion of the MDC. BIMSB will be further expanded by continuous recruiting of principal investigators. The current 17 BIMSB labs will move to a new research building in the center of Berlin in early 2019.

We invite outstanding scientists from the field of computational sciences, mathematics or physics with demonstrated expertise in computational and/or theoretical approaches for Molecular Biology to apply for the position of an Independent Junior Group Leader (Reg.-no 10988/2018). We are specifically looking for candidates who develop methods-driven quantitative approaches that make use of large datasets to investigate human disorders or models of human diseases (e.g. modern statistical or algorithmic approaches to interpret massive heterogeneous data from large patient cohorts or genomics studies), although we will consider outstanding candidates with a different computational focus. Experience in working in an interdisciplinary environment to solve complex scientific questions is essential, as is a track record of highly successful post-doctoral research or, in exceptional cases, doctoral research of the highest caliber.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research, acquire extramural funding, and is encouraged to engage in collaborative projects with experimental and computational groups and state-of-the-art facilities at the BIMSB, MDC and other research institutions in Berlin. The MDC/BIMSB will provide access to cluster and GPU compute facilities as well as administrative support.

We offer funding for 5 years with possible extension of 4 years. The package typically includes the group leader’s position (salary according to the German public salaries, TVöD Bund/Ost), start-up investment, staff of one post-doc, one PhD student, one technical staff employee, a fixed annual consumables budget, and opportunities to recruit centrally funded students from the MDC´s PhD fellowship programs.

For further information, please visit our website https://www.mdc-berlin.de/bimsb . Enquiries about the positions and perspectives should be addressed to Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Rajewsky (rajewsky@mdc-berlin.de).

The MDC is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity and promotion of an inclusive environment.

Applications should be uploaded by October 15, 2018, including cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, names of potential referees, outline of present and planned research, in a single pdf file, maximum size 8 MB to the MDC application portal:

  https://application.mdc-berlin.de/.
