Overview Of Role
This role provides an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team delivering the Soil to Nutrition (S2N) institute strategic programme funded by BBSRC which aims to deliver pathways for sustainable arable and grassland agriculture within the UK.
Specifically, the post will involve analysing existing empirical and modelling data held at Rothamsted Research with a view to testing statistically useful metrics for distinguishing different farm system types (e.g. cereal, mixed, livestock) and their performance (e.g. delivery of private and public goods) along pathways (e.g. driven by current or new agri-policies) to sustainable intensification (SI) following the uptake of improved management practices.
The post-holder will be expected to have some understanding of farm systems (e.g. management/operations, business structure, financial performance) and their potential impacts on public goods including for example, unintended consequences on the environment (e.g. soil degradation, water pollution). The findings of this analysis will feed into the broader S2N programme by clarifying the utility of a range of metrics for benchmarking farm systems and their change through time, on the basis of current data holdings at Rothamsted Research.
Experience of working with and analysing large datasets is essential, as is some experience of using statistical tests with large datasets. Where necessary, training in running the relevant farm systems models being used by the S2N programme will be provided.
