Postdoctoral fellow in stroke research

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of microorganisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. At present, the institute has about 380 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets. It is composed of the following five departments: the Department of Infectious Diseases, the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, the Department of Pathology and Genetics, the Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine, and the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to join professor Christina Jern’s stroke research group at the Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Gothenburg. For more information about the research group please visit: http://biomedicine.gu.se/ominst/avd/genetik/forskare/christina-jern. The Stroke research group also has broad collaborations outside our institute, both locally and internationally. Prof Jern is chair of the research network Stroke Centrum West, which is a forum for cooperation and knowledge exchange between stroke researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, and Region Västra Götaland (https://strokecentrumvast.gu.se). We are members of the International Stroke Genetics Consortium (ISGC) and are active in several ISGC projects.

  Subject area: Stroke Research

Subject area description: Worldwide, one in six people will experience a stroke during their lifetime. Stroke is the second most common cause of death and the most common cause of acquired disability in adults. Our research goals are to identify risk factors and genetic mechanisms of importance both for the risk of stroke and and outcomes after stroke. The research is translational and thus includes both clinical and experimental studies. The research group has a broad competence in stroke, genetics, and hemostasis. This in combination with a wide research network ensures an inspiring research environment with good opportunities for high quality research.

Job assignments: The successful appointee will participate in two complementary lines of research within the stroke research group. The first is a project on “precision medicine”. This work involves analyzing the results of multiplexed protein analyses within the Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke (SAHLSIS). The second is a project on genetic factors and includes genome wide association studies (GWAS) and exome sequencing in relation to stroke and intermediate phenotypes. Here the postdoc will have a coordinating role for the group’s national and international collaborators. The postdoc can also be involved in experimental studies to functionally characterize genetic variants of interest.

Eligibility: An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application. The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment: A PhD in a relevant field is a requirement (eg medicine, molecular biology), and good scientific production in relation to the time elapsed since completing the Ph.D. Experience in working with large datasets, such as clinical genetic association studies and/or large studies on protein biomarkers as well a statistical processing of these kinds of data are merits. The position requires very good computer skills and experience of programming is meritorious, as is experience using web-based bioinformatics tools and public databases within relevant areas. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.

The applicant should be independent in his/her work, have good interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a research organization. We value good communication, administrative and strategic skills. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Employment: The employment is fulltime and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
