POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (SENSORY-MOTOR INTEGRATION FOR PROSTHETIC APPLICATIONS)

Aalto University

Job Description

Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our main campus is located in Espoo, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community's diversity and inclusiveness in the future as well. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented

POSTDOCORAL RESEARCHER IN SENSORY-MOTOR INTEGRATION FOR PROSTHETIC APPLICATIONS

‍The research project focuses on developing High-Fidelity Bidirectional Neural Drive Interfacing framework, which will allow establishment of real-time neuro-driven closed loop system yielding access to a highly potent sensory and motor information. The idea is to develop an artificial sensory feedback system that relies on percutaneous electrical stimulation to encode proprioception-like information which will be provided to prosthetic limb users. To fine tune such a system, a protocol based around magnetoencephalographic (MEG) observations will be devised and applied in both able bodied as well as limb impaired individuals. This research is a part of the Academy of Finland funded research project Hi-Fi BiNDIng and will be conducted at the Bionic and Rehabilitation Engineering group of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University. The project will be done in a collaboration with Aalborg University, University of Brescia, and University of Twente. Finally, the research involves working with a local hospital and their patients.

‍Your goals as a postdoctoral researcher

  Development and investigation of novel techniques and methods for decoding neural information from MEG signals

  Development and investigation of sensory-feedback electrical stimulation protocols for prosthetic applications

  Implementation, integration, and testing of the developed methods and systems

  Coordination and completion of experimental studies with able bodied and limb different participants

  Communication of the conducted work through different outlets (e.g. peer reviewed journal publications, scientific conferences, …)

  Contribute to the writing of project documentation and research proposals

  Taking part in supporting and mentoring other project team members

Research group

Professor Ivan Vujaklija leads the Bionic and Rehabilitation Engineering research group, which investigates engineering techniques for human-machine interfacing in order to support, augment and rehabilitate human motor function (https: // bit.ly/32jfYgn).

Your background

Ideally you should have:

  PhD (or an equivalent degree) in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Neuroscience or a relevant field

  Expertise in signal processing

  Experience in magnetoencephalography (MEG)

  Experience in programming (e.g. MATLAB and/or Python)

  Excellent command of English language (both spoken and written)

It is beneficial if you have:

  Knowledge of human motor control and sensory-motor integration

  Experience in electrical stimulation

  Experience in human-machine interfacing and rehabilitation

Salary and contract terms

The selected postdoctoral research is expected to conduct their research at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University as part of Bionic and Rehabilitation Engineering group. The project covers 15 months' worth of salary which will be determined depending on experience and qualifications. As an employer, Aalto University provides excellent learning and development opportunities as well as occupational health care services, commuter ticket benefit and versatile exercise services by Unisport. Finland has a comprehensive social security system. Preferable starting time is early 2021.

Ready to apply?

Please submit your application through our recruiting system by using the "Apply now!" link below and include the following documents in English:

  Curriculum Vitae (with the list of academic and professional achievements if you have)

  Application cover letter

  References

The application period closes on 23 December 2020, but we will start reviewing candidates immediately upon the receiving of the applications. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
