Description

We invite applications for one Edson Foundation Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the ASU-Banner Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center (NDRC) at Arizona State University. The goal of the Edson foundation is to support research that will lead to new discoveries that will improve the quality of life for people affected by neurodegenerative diseases.

As a prestigious Edson Postdoctoral Research Scholar, you will have a primary mentor in the NDRC, but will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other faculty. NDRC prides itself in producing high impactful research through collaborations. The selected candidate will work on projects related to identifying novel cellular/molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. This will include work with human post-mortem tissue, cell and tissue cultures and single cell expression studies.

We will begin reviewing applications February 13, 2021 and will continue to review incoming applications on a biweekly basis until the position is filled.

Essential Duties

•Biomathematical analysis of gene expression data, immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, cell culture, cell sorting, RNAseq, qPCR, light and fluorescence microscopy, confocal imaging, image analysis, data analyses and oral presentations.

•Assist with the preparation and writing of manuscripts, posters and grant proposals.

•Coordinate among other faculty and team members.

•Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and actively participate in journal clubs and lab meetings

WorkingEnvironment

Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks; to manage conflict; to interact in a team environment; and to communicate through verbal and written work.

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting and laboratory subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.

Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.

May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirator.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. within the last four years, plus at least two years of additional experience in biophysics, biomathematics, or molecular neuroscience, or neurobiology related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Desired Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must be highly motivated and have prior experience in biophysics or neurobiology. Candidates must also possess a background in biostatistics and bioinformatics.  The candidate must be motivated to learn skills that implement integration of a multidisciplinary approach, from chromatin structure to analysis of cell/molecular data to clinical/neuropathological data to cognitive data.  The candidate must be a team player, as collaborations are a key driver to impactful research at the NDRC.

The Biodesign institute is home to the ASU-Banner Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center (NDRC); this is a collaboration between ASU and Banner officially entered into in July 2015. The goal of NDRC is to develop a world-class research center that houses basic and translational researchers to address etiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. We share a strong desire to collaborate in an effort to advance scientific progress against Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, to make meaningful contributions to the understanding and promotion of healthy existence, to establish an organization that unites clinical and basic research in an effort to bridge the gap between discovery, and delivery of health care of affected populations.
